We introduce you to some of the members of the Hartree Centre team.




Rupert Ford – Computational Scientist

Rupert has been involved in high performance computing for over 25 years. He has been working on Hartree Centre projects since he joined STFC in April 2012 and officially became a member of the Hartree Centre team in 2016. He has particular interests in portable performance, code generation and coupling systems. Most of his time is spent working on a collaborative project with the Met Office, helping them to develop their next generation weather and climate model.



Lisa Booth – Partner Services Officer

Lisa joined the Hartree Centre in April 2016 as a member of the newly formed Programme Management Office, bringing five years of project management experience in the nuclear industry. Lisa’s role is to successfully coordinate the delivery of a portfolio of industry collaboration projects, and her responsibility spans any biology and chemistry projects including those with our key strategic partner, Unilever; any grant-funded projects, including national pilot LCR 4.0; and any client-specific training projects.


Dr Adrian Toland – Business Development Manager

Adrian is the Business Development Manager for life Sciences & healthcare working to accelerate competitiveness of these sectors using the Hartree Centre’s capabilities. He brings a wealth of experience to this role having held research and commercial managerial roles in both public and private sector organisations across Europe, including Helsinn Birex Therapeutics Ltd, Knowledge Transfer Network and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). Whilst at MMU as Assistant Regional Director, Adrian led a team to deliver the £20m National HE STEM Programme. Adrian now also leads the centre’s mission and strategy to deliver competitive advantage by accelerating the adoption of cognitive computing amongst commercial, academia and government clients.


Laura Johnston – PA to Director and Deputy Director

Laura has worked for the Hartree Centre since its creation in 2013 as PA to the Hartree Centre Director and more recently the Deputy Director, supporting both through the growth of the Centre. Laura brings 20 years administration experience at a senior level and having worked for STFC for 9 years is well placed to advise, assist and support the Senior Management Team to ensure that the Hartree Centre delivers on its mission to transform UK competitiveness by accelerating the adoption of data-centric computing, big data and cognitive technologies.
