Hartree Centre presents at International Industrial Supercomputing Workshop

The Hartree Centres Alison Kennedy and Michael Gleaves were invited to speak at this years International Industrial Supercomputing Workshop in Barcelona.


The Hartree Centre’s Alison Kennedy and Michael Gleaves recently returned from presenting at the International Industrial Supercomputing Workshop (link opens in a new window), which took place 22-23 September 2016 at Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (link opens in a new window).

The annual gathering of industrial partnership programs from leading high performance computing (HPC) centres around the world provides a unique opportunity for discussion and engagement between geographically diverse organisations with similar goals for industrial collaboration using supercomputing technologies and expertise.

The event allows HPC organisations spanning five continents to share strategies, success stories, technical challenges and discuss best practice with other international centres of expertise in the field. It also promotes and provides opportunities to identify international collaborations.

The 2016 workshop saw a stronger emergence of themes such as the internet of things (IoT) and cognitive computing technologies, within which our own interest and application activities at the Hartree Centre have grown significantly over the last year. Common challenges discussed included sustainability, and difficulty in engaging with and identifying businesses, particularly SMEs, that could benefit from the application of data intensive computing capabilities – although largely the uptake of these technologies was seen to be on the rise.

Michael Gleaves, Deputy Director of the Hartree Centre, presented an overview of the Hartree Centre's current activities and practices. Alison Kennedy, Director of the Hartree Centre, also spoke at the workshop in relation to her role as Chair of the Board of Directors for PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), an organisation whose mission is to enable high impact scientific discovery and engineering research and development across all disciplines, throughout Europe, using world class computing and data management resources.
