Our new Director, Alison Kennedy explains her vision for the Hartree Centre

The Hartree Centre has an exciting and challenging mission - to transform UK competitiveness by accelerating the adoption of data-centric computing and cognitive technologies. A key driver for us is the surge in demand for scalable solutions for data-focused challenges in a very wide range of potential applications areas and industry sectors.

We’re also focusing on realising the potential of cognitive computing (systems which learn at scale, reason with purpose and interact with humans naturally) to deliver step changes for British businesses.

Through harnessing the capabilities of the latest technologies, our project scientists, research software engineers and solutions architects will work with early adopters of promising new technologies to deliver proof of concept solutions, in collaboration with industry end users, and generate new intellectual property. This can, in due course, be commercialised and exploited to deliver sustainable competitive advantage for the UK.

Establishing mutually beneficial partnerships with industry and academia will be critical to our success – these partnerships will focus on a joint approach to solving user-led challenges which are brought to us by industry. Our multi-skilled teams, using the latest research, tools and techniques, will work together to solve problems and to remove barriers to access for industry. We will have a well-defined and complementary set of Hartree services to offer to industry and a strong focus on user support with professional project and service delivery.

I have been working in the IT sector, primarily in high performance computing for over 30 years, and delivering on the Hartree vision is the greatest challenge that I have faced in my long career. The next few years will be incredibly exciting for everyone involved with Hartree – we look forward to keeping you up to date with our progress and to sharing our successes with you.
