Alison Kennedy looks ahead and discusses some of the projects we’ll be working on at the Hartree Centre throughout 2017.

Welcome to the first edition of Hartree Insights for 2017! I’d like to wish you all a belated “Happy New Year” and hope you are off to the same flying start we are here at the Hartree Centre. The first month of the year has already flown by and we’ve been busy hitting the ground running (perhaps a tad less spritely than we felt before eating all those mince pies) with some exciting projects including recruiting companies for the IoTUK Boost programme, spreading the word about LCR 4.0 and making plans for the arrival of our brand new supercomputer!

First of all, let’s talk about LCR 4.0. Launched late 2016, this is a collaborative project to support manufacturing SMEs in the Liverpool City Region with several other respected technology organisations. Funded by ERDF, we’ll be helping local SMEs to enhance their productivity and optimise their processes using digital technologies. For this project, manufacturing isn’t a restrictive term – it can include any part of the supply chain, from companies developing a tangible product to businesses providing services that support them. At the Hartree Centre, we’ll help businesses take advantage of computing technologies, integrate Internet of Things (IoT) systems or use data to make better decisions or predictions. Find out about LCR 4.0 and whether your SME could apply here.

We’re also continuing development within our cognitive hospital project with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where we will be using cognitive technologies and data analytics to improve patient experiences throughout their hospital journey. We’ll be revealing new progress in this area in the next few months so watch this space for more news!

Last but not least, if you attended Computing Insight UK 2016 in December, you will be well aware that this year we’re getting a new supercomputer! Preparations are underway in our machine room to welcome the UK’s first Bull Sequana X1000 supercomputer in March 2017 as part of our new collaboration with Atos. We’re all very excited to get it up and running – not least to see where it places in the TOP500 list!

That’s all for now – until the next edition of Hartree Insights, you can keep up to date with our news on Twitter & LinkedIn.
